Confirmation of Payee

An added layer of protection to help safeguard you from fraud, scams and mistaken payments.

What is Confirmation of Payee?

Confirmation of Payee is an industry-wide service that matches the bank account details entered by a payer with the account details held by the recipient’s bank. It’s a new layer of protection for Australian consumers and businesses when they’re making a payment to a BSB and account number.

How does Confirmation of Payee help?

Avoid Mistakes

Confirmation of Payee matches the bank account details you’ve entered with the account details held by the recipient’s bank, and displays a match outcome before you make a payment, helping you avoid mistakes.

Have more Confidence

Confirmation of Payee helps you feel more confident that your money is going where you intend it to go.

Verify First

Confirmation of Payee can also help protect you from scams and mistaken payments by matching the account details you’ve entered with the account details held by the recipient’s bank.

Builds Trust

Confirmation of Payee gives banks and financial institutions another vital tool to combat fraud and scams and helps build member trust when paying to a BSB and account number in Australia.

How does it work?

When you send money using a BSB and account number, Confirmation of Payee checks if the account details held by the recipient’s bank matches the account name, BSB, and account number you’ve entered. You’ll be shown if it’s a match, a close match, a no match or if there is an error. That important information can help you decide whether you need to go back and check your details again, or if you feel comfortable to proceed with the payment.

Match

The account details you entered match the bank records of the intended recipient, and the recipient's name will be displayed.

Close Match

The account details you entered closely match the bank records of the intended recipient, and the recipient's name will be displayed.

No Match

The account details you entered do not match the bank records of the intended recipient. The recipient's name will not be displayed unless it is a business or government organisation.

Error

The service could not confirm the account details you entered match.

FAQs

Will Confirmation of Payee prevent my payment from going through?

No. Payments will only be stopped if the recipient’s account has been closed or there is no account found. However, we recommend reviewing the Confirmation of Payee result carefully before continuing, especially if the result is a no match. This extra step helps safeguard you against sending money to the wrong person, or falling victim to fraud.

Will others be able to see my name through Confirmation of Payee?

Yes. Your name is only shown to the person making the payment if the details they provide either match, or are very similar to your account information. If the details don’t match, your name won’t appear. This helps protect your privacy and reduces the risk of your personal information being misused.

For business or other non-personal accounts, the account name will be displayed to the payer, even if it’s different from the name they entered.

What should I do if the account number field doesn’t accept the full number?

If the account number you’re entering is too long for the field and begins with zeros, try removing the leading zeros and then double-check that the details are still correct. If you’re unsure, confirm the information with the recipient. If you need assistance, please get in touch with us on 1300 13 23 28 via service@australianmilitarybank.com.au.

What is Confirmation of Payee (CoP)?

Confirmation of Payee is an industry-wide service designed to help reduce fraud and mistaken payments. It works for domestic transfers within Australia made using a BSB and account number. When you enter payment details, CoP checks them against the information held by the recipient’s bank and tells you if they match.

This service can:

  • Guide your decision on whether to go ahead with the payment, re-check the details, or cancel it.
  • Lower the chances of sending money to the wrong account or falling victim to a scam.

Confirmation of Payee is delivered by Australian Payments Plus, the organisation behind other trusted payment services including BPAY®, Osko®, eftpos, PayID® and PayTo®.

How does Confirmation of Payee work?

When you make a payment using a BSB and account number for the first time, set up a new payee, or update an existing payee’s details in your online banking, the system will automatically run a Confirmation of Payee check. This compares the details you entered with the information held by the recipient’s bank and will tell you if it’s a match, a close match, or not a match.

These results give you greater confidence that your payment is being sent where you intended it to and helps guide your next steps before proceeding.

How do I activate Confirmation of Payee?

You don’t need to take any action. The Confirmation of Payee check runs automatically whenever you set up a new payee, edit an existing payee’s details, or make a payment to a BSB and account number for the first time.

Can I still make the payment whatever the match outcome?

Yes, payments will only be blocked if the result shows “Account not active” or “No account found”, meaning the account has been closed. Otherwise, you can still proceed. However we strongly recommend staying alert to scams and double-checking who you’re paying, as mistaken or fraudulent payments may not be able to be recovered.

I am trying to pay someone and am getting a ‘no match’ outcome. What should I do?

Double-check the account name, BSB and account number with the person or business you’re paying to confirm they’re correct. It’s also important to stay alert to scams as mistaken or fraudulent payments might not be recoverable.

Can I opt-out of having my name from being displayed to others?

Yes. Eligible Australian Military Bank members can request to opt out of Confirmation of Payee. If you choose to opt out, your account name and the match result will not be shown to payers, which may reduce the chance that a payment to you will go ahead.
